Pudendal Neuralgia
Nerve Pain in the Pelvis, Perineum, or Genital Region
Overview
Pudendal neuralgia is a painful condition caused by irritation or compression of the pudendal nerve. This condition may cause burning, stabbing, or aching pain in these areas, often worsened by sitting. It can occur after trauma, prolonged sitting, surgery, or childbirth and is frequently underdiagnosed.

Common Symptoms
- Burning or sharp pain in the perineum, genitals, rectum, or sit bones
- Pain that worsens with sitting and improves when standing or lying down
- Genital numbness, tingling, or hypersensitivity
- Painful urination, bowel movements, or sexual activity
- Feeling of “sitting on a golf ball” or pressure in the pelvis
Causes & Risk Factors
- Prolonged cycling or sitting on hard surfaces
- Pelvic trauma or fractures
- Childbirth injury or pelvic surgery
- Work-related prolonged sitting or repetitive strain
- Prior urologic, gynecologic, or colorectal procedures
