Post-Laminectomy Syndrome (Failed Back Surgery Syndrome)
Persistent Pain After Spine Surgery
Overview
Post-laminectomy syndrome, often referred to as failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS), describes persistent or recurrent back and/or leg pain following spinal surgery. While many spine surgeries are successful, some patients may continue to experience discomfort due to scar tissue formation, nerve damage, altered spinal mechanics, or unresolved disc or joint issues. This condition can be frustrating, but targeted pain management can help.
Common Symptoms
- Ongoing back or leg pain after spinal surgery
- Burning, tingling, or shooting pain in the legs (radicular pain)
- Stiffness, aching, or dull pain in the lower back
- Numbness or weakness in the legs
- Difficulty standing, walking, or sitting for long periods
Causes & Risk Factors
- Scar tissue formation near spinal nerves (epidural fibrosis)
- Incomplete decompression or persistent nerve compression
- Spinal instability or adjacent segment degeneration
- Hardware-related irritation or nerve injury
- Recurrent disc herniation or stenosis
